Under a meridian blue sky with wall to wall sunshine on the beautiful island of Gozo is the beautiful Amchara retreat (Amchara).
I was invited here to provide two Functional Medicine presentations and spend a week at this amazing place, where people come to experience a wonderful detoxifying programme for health.
Naturopaths at the retreat work with guests to support them through a detoxification programme and the most exquisite flavoured juices, in a variety of rich colours, come freshly made out of the kitchen throughout the day . Guests bask on the terrace beside the pool, relaxing in the sunshine and taking a dip to cool off at intervals. All the meals and juices for the guests are thoughtfully designed and use local ingredients and carefully sourced organic wholefoods.
There are many treatments to experience that compliment a health promoting visit – reflexology, massages, colonic hydrotherapy, reiki, heart rate variability monitoring via a HRV biofeedback machine (Biofeedback information), IHHT Hypoxia testing (simulated altitude training), a Thyroflex monitor providing information on thyroid health which was invented by Dr Daryl Turner, twice recommended for the Nobel prize for medicine. And there is just so much more. I had an amazing Swedish massage which left me floating on air, gained valuable information from all the monitoring equipment and every morning and evening went on an interesting guided walk through the island which took us down to the Mediterranean sea. Each morning also I joined a wonderful yoga group, during the week took boat trips to view the exquisite island caves and beaches and relaxed in the tranquillity and peace of the retreat.
We can acknowledge our bodies are constantly detoxifying, however a little help for the liver and these vital detoxification pathways is a great way to lose weight and feel rejuvenated. In the 21st century there are many toxins to contend with; environmental pollutants, metabolites from the bodies processing systems, processed foods, xenostrogens, free radicle generation etc. and days spent at the Amchara retreat can support the body to upregulate the much needed detoxification processes, while relaxing and enjoying a Mediterranean experience.
On two of the days I was at the retreat, guests all gathered together in a beautifully cool room at Amchara for me to give talks expounding on the Functional Medicine approach to ‘Blood Sugar Management’ and ‘Gut Health’. Management of blood sugar is a key aspect of weight management, disease risk reduction, lowering chronic inflammation, supporting sustained energy and reducing the stress response. The take away message was; to eat a wholefood diet, take regular low glycaemic load meals, allow a 12-14hr fast overnight and have a good lifestyle and exercise regime.
And then the importance of ‘Gut Health’ which is the seat of ‘Health’ and an area so often neglected. This is such a large topic and my talk could only summarise and give pointers and wow what a topic. The bacteria of the Gut and the integrity of the Gut lining influence; our mood, our nutrients, the inflammatory response, the progression of disease and so much more. The knowledge and science on this topic increases daily and here the message is look after the beneficial bacteria, eat a diversity of rich coloured plant foods (being very mindful of the prebiotic foods) and if you have any inflammatory conditions or Gut issues, see a good Functional Medicine practitioner or Nutritionist (Nutritional Therapist) registered with BANT.
If you are looking for a kick start into a healthier way of life or need to relax, recharge and detoxify or just want to experience the regeneration of a retreat this is a wonderful way to get there and what better place than Amchara on the exquisite island of Gozo.
