We are continually exposed to toxins from the environment, exhaust fumes, cosmetics, pesticides and herbicides, cleaning products, food additives, bacteria, some naturally occurring components of foods to list but a few and how effectively our systems detoxify these onslaughts is key to our health.
Our bodies have a well-developed system of detoxification which involves most cells of the body, although we think of our liver as the prime detoxification organ. How well these systems work is influenced largely by our genetics, age, gender, disease, medication, smoking, alcohol and last but not least the foods we eat.
We regularly notice how some people are much more affected than others by alcohol or medication – genetic differences in the enzymes that metabolise these toxins will strongly influence how much these toxins affect us.
So we can’t change our genetics but we can help our detoxification systems by providing foods and nutrients that support these systems.
So foods that are good this time of the year…..
- All the brassica vegetables, so your humble cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts etc. Not only do these contain lots of powerful anti-oxidants but also plant nutrients that support the detoxification pathways. So the ideal is to include these in your diet as regularly as possible.
- Garlic and onions again because they contain sulphides or plant nutrients that support those detoxification pathways
- Beetroot, a delicious earthy vegetable with many health benefits and not least it has been shown to support liver enzymes involved in these all essential processe
- Any fresh, dark and richly coloured vegetables and fruit contain anti-oxidants that play a vital role in the detoxification processes
